Sycamore Canyon

Description: Sycamore Canyon is a very large area with a long Canyon. It is a declared Wilderness Area and is somewhat remote. The actual birding site is located only at the mouth of the Canyon where it empties into the Verde River. It is a lush riparian habitat with permanent water for the first mile or so as you walk upstream. There are two large springs after that mile and they alone are worth the hike. Of all the bird sites on this web site, this is probably the most wild and natural.

Administrative Agency: Coconino National Forest

Restrictions and fees: All the usual restrictions for Wilderness Areas apply here.

Elevation: 3600'

Ease of road access: After the pavement ends in Clarkdale, there is approximately 10 miles of reasonably good dirt to be driven. Except for a few dry wash crossings, the road is reasonably good. the few miles travel along the River and are quite scenic and offer good birding opportunities although fencing has limited the opportunities to stop. If you have little experience in the back country, you ought to check first with the Forest Service.

Ease of hiking access: The first 1/4 mile is steep, but after that the trail is clear and flat.

Approximate area size: 1- 3 miles along Sycamore Creek depending upon your energy.

Frequency of use by public: Moderate use by hikers.

Parking facilities: The dirt parking lot (end of the road, actually) is adequate.

Non-bird Interests: Hiking, geology

A list that is always under construction (see the text to the right) is the list of birds actually seen at this site. That growing list can be seen here.
