Description: Dead Horse is located within Cottonwood, Arizona and offers camping, fishing, hiking, and horse back riding. It also offers great birding. There are several lagoons which are surrounded with reeds and the kinds of vegetation that red-wings and other birds love. There is a great (and very easy) trail through the Cottonwood riparian corridor along the Verde River and the birding is wonderful. For simply relaxing, there is even an "armchair birding" site. Administrative Agency: Arizona State Parks Restrictions and fees: Entrance fee is $7.00; Annual Pass is $75.00. Elevation: 3296' Ease of road access: All roads to and within the park are fully paved.. Ease of hiking access: The trails are all easily walked (hiked is too strong a word here.). There are many trials to choose from and a complete printed guide is available at the entrance station. The lagoons are all bordered by easy trails. Approximate area size: 1.3 sq. miles Frequency of use by public: Light to moderate; Park is next to urban area. Parking facilities: Abundant and well distributed. Non-bird Interests: Camping (tent and cabin), fishing, mt. bike riding. |
